About the facility
Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong's CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.
About the Department of Surgery
Barwon Health was the first regional hospital in Australia to offer a robotic service situated in the public hospital. Our PRESET group have the opportunity to be trained in robotic assisting.
Dr Kathryn McLeod and Dr Rekha Ganeshalingam, are the PRESET Supervisor and Deputy Supervisor respectively. They will work closely with you to help you achieve your goals of getting on to a training program. Dr McLeod is a Urological Surgeon at Barwon, with her Masters of Surgical Education. She is the chair of the Education sub-committee and past Chair of the Regional Training Board for Vic/Tas for the Urological Society for Australia and New Zealand. Dr Rekha Ganeshalingam, our PRESET Deputy Supervisor, is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Barwon.
Our educational program includes monthly teaching specifically for surgery, as well as additional educational opportunities for regular general surgery teaching.
There are many opportunities to participate in research collaboration groups and have access to statistician assistance. In addition to this, there is an Orthopaedic Interest sub-group as well as a Urology Research sub-group with regular research meetings.
There are also teaching opportunities that can be undertaken through Deakin University.
For those intending on sitting the GSSE, regular tutorials are run throughout the year. There is help and mentoring for PRESETs throughout their application process as well as preparation for the surgical interviews.
Additionally, there is the opportunity for juniors to take on leadership positions on our PRESET committee.
About the Role
As a PRESET Unaccredited Surgical Registrar, we aim to tailor your terms for your further surgical career and allow you to fulfil all pre-requisites to fulfil the requirements for SET training. PRESET registrars have the opportunity to have rotations in: Orthopaedics, Urology, Vascular, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, ICU, Alfred Trauma, Hamilton General Surgery and Warrnambool General Surgery. Rotations on Surgical Nights and Cover are also expected.
This is the opportunity for PRESETs to step up and take on a role with increased responsibility which is ideal prior to getting on to SET training. Please note, applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience as a doctor in order to be eligible for this position.
There is the opportunity to work in rural services (Warrnambool, Hamilton and Colac) which can help with gaining extra experience as well as points for some surgical applications.
If you have the qualifications and aptitude along with excellent interpersonal skills and the commitment to improving patient care, this may be the role for you.
The successful applicants will also assist in general reporting and participate in the roster for after-hours, on-call and recall as required by the unit.
