Opportunity for a capable Senior Solicitor to join a forward-thinking State government legal team that supports the diverse work of the department as a responsive, strategic advisory service on complex, high-value work. The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is looking to fill three roles to join three highly skilled in-house legal teams, within the Legal and Legislation division. One role is ongoing, and two roles are 12 months / 9 months fixed term to cover parental leave. The roles suit mid-level lawyers.
The Legal and Legislation Division works across multiple functional groups in a variety of portfolios including energy, environment, climate action, water, agriculture, and earth resources.
About you: To be successful, you will need to have demonstrated experience in the delivery of authoritative, strategic and practical legal advice, in at least two or more of the following areas:
administrative law (including operation of government and an awareness of Constitutional issues), statutory interpretation and corporate governance. litigation and dispute resolution. major projects. commercial and contract matters. Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications: An Australian lawyer holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria). Demonstrated ability to deliver - in a timely manner - accurate, concise, clear and authoritative legal advice in the core areas of administrative law (including operation of government and an awareness of Constitutional issues) and statutory interpretation, commercial and contract matters, corporate governance, litigation and dispute resolution. Experience delivering advice in two of these areas is mandatory and highly regarded in all. Experience in either broader general in-house or government legal practice and/or some of the department's areas of specialisation: environmental law, energy law, First Nations self-determination and related frameworks, agriculture, Crown land use and development, natural resource management and fire and emergency management, commissions and inquiries. Well-developed experience delivering advice in environment, natural resource management contexts and in litigation management will be highly regarded. The work location for these positions is 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne with hybrid work arrangements available.
