Position Overview APS 6 - $91,944 - $104,393 per annum plus superannuation Australian Antarctic Division Kingston, TAS About Us The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As the primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals, which include:
Maintaining the Antarctic Treaty System and enhancing Australia's influence within it; Protecting the Antarctic environment; Understanding the role of Antarctica in the global climate system; and Undertaking scientific work of practical, economic, and national significance. The AAD also administers the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands.
The Job Key duties will include, but are not limited to:
Provide direction and support to the Maritime Capabilities Team by fostering a strong culture of safety, inclusion, equity, and flexibility. Management of the AAD's domestic commercial vessel fleet, including: Compliance with Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requirements; Review of vessel operating instructions and safety management systems; Planning, implementation, and administration of small vessel operations; Whole of life vessel maintenance programs; Operational coordination of small vessel operations; Recruitment, briefing, and training programs for personnel. Lead or coordinate procurement requirements and processes of the Maritime Capabilities Team. Lead or coordinate the gathering and analysing of information to develop key operational documentation. Ensure appropriate records management standards are adhered to by the Maritime Capabilities Team. Lead the delivery of voyage management and watercraft operator briefing and training programs. What We Are Looking For Knowledge and Experience Proven experience in whole of life domestic commercial vessel fleet management. Proven experience operating watercraft (under 15m in length) in support of operations and/or scientific research. Skills and Capabilities High level communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders. Experience in procurement, contractor management, finance, and records management. Ability to apply risk management methodologies in the maritime environment. Experience in analyzing and interpreting procedural, regulatory, and legislative documentation. Commitment to modern WH&S and environmental management principles. Experience in the development and delivery of stakeholder presentations and training programs. Additional Requirements The successful applicant may be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions and must meet specific medical and personal qualities requirements.
Demonstrate personal qualities necessary to perform as a successful team member in isolated environments. Be certified as fit for Antarctic service by the AAD's Polar Medicine Unit. Mandatory Qualifications Current Coxswains 1 (NC) Certificate or higher and a current Level 2 First Aid Certificate. Desirable Qualifications A relevant qualification from an Australian tertiary institution and/or demonstrated industry experience. Eligibility and Other Requirements Citizenship: To be eligible for employment, you must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance.
