As an EL1 Senior Lawyer, your position operates at a level that demands both complexity and sensitivity.
We have 4 vacancies total in this position, many of these new, which means there is a substantial amount of greenfield legal work and projects you may have access to!
You'll undertake work that is very complex or sensitive, operating under broad direction while exercising a considerable degree of independence.
In this leadership role, you'll engage in complex problem-solving and issues management, often coordinating and undertaking detailed or sensitive projects that significantly impact strategic, political, or operational outcomes for the agency.
Your responsibilities extend beyond legal expertise; they encompass strategic influence, stakeholder relationships, and budget management.
Here's the key duties of this position:
Providing accurate and practical legal advice with limited or no supervision, on a range of complex legal issues with specialist skills in one or more of the following areas:commercial law (including drafting or reviewing a range of complex contracts with a focus on software / IT / data agreements, procurement, intellectual property, confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements, probity/conflicts of interest)statutory interpretation (including advice on regulatory/compliance matters and assisting with legislation and policy development)public / administrative law (including freedom of information and public interest disclosure)Building positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders including other Australian government agencies and external legal service providersEnsuring compliance with the Legal Services Directions 2017Supporting the Principal Lawyer on a wide range of legal mattersManage external legal service provider arrangements, including budgets.You'll work alongside a community of legal professionals in a collaborative and inclusive setting.

Your familiarity with government operations is essential.Demonstrated ability to swiftly identify key legal issues and provide clear, concise, and accurate advice that meets client needs.
Your expertise in distilling complex legal concepts into actionable guidance is crucial.Excellent communication skills are vital.
You'll develop productive working relationships and navigate complex stakeholder dynamics as an in-house adviser within a collaborative environment.Your track record should demonstrate the capability to handle sensitive matters adeptly.
These may impact the Agency, the Public Service, or the broader community.
Discretion and professionalism are paramount.Proven leadership skills in guiding and developing legal professionals.
You'll manage legal services efficiently and effectively, maintaining integrity and personal drive.Demonstrated success in managing legal teams.
Your ability to foster collaboration, resolve conflicts, and drive results is essential.To be considered for this role, you must:
Have a minimum of 5 years of post-admission experience, including time as a government lawyer or providing advice to Government.Be admitted as a practitioner (however described) of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory.Hold a current Government restricted practicing certificate or be eligible to obtain one.Ability to obtain and maintain national police check.Australian Citizenship is a condition of eligibility.Ability to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a higher clearance if required by the Agency.Additional InformationThe position maybe filled in Brisbane, Sydney or Canberra.

Salary: This role offers between$116,075 - $127,147 plus 15.4% superannuation depending on skills and experience.
