The Opportunity Apply your expertise in pest control & digital spatial modelling to a diverse role Play a lead role in developing more sustainable platforms for agripest control Grow your research career with CSIRO – Australia's National Science Agency! Agripest management is a critical aspect of sustainable agriculture and an important challenge facing communities. The increasing restrictions imposed on agrichemicals and their reduced effectiveness, as well as the growth in advanced technologies, are transforming the way we handle agripest management and driving opportunities to take up more sustainable digital tools. CSIRO, as Australia's National Science Agency, is committed to providing impact-focused scientific research, collaborating with industry and stakeholders, to deliver real solutions. Our team has extensive experience in conducting research on diverse pest complexes at the landscape scale, and developing new tools, knowledge and practices for more sustainable pest management. In line with this approach, the Research Scientist in this position will play a vital role in facilitating the transition to digitally enabled agripest management and driving innovative research & scientific achievements aligned with our strategies. You will apply your domain expertise and stakeholder engagement skills to develop key relationships, both internally and externally, and lead components of two critical long-term CSIRO-led multi-agency projects. Using the knowledge and understanding of the contexts and challenges in the projects, you will be responsible for developing a foundational digital spatial platform for durable pest management, combining a diversity of biophysical data streams and models. The role offers you an opportunity to play an influential role in the eventual adoption of new digital tools to manage agripests across Australian agricultural landscapes, and creating an independent profile for your career development. If you are motivated by leading research initiatives, forming collaborative partnerships and applying your expertise into contributing to making a real difference with your work, this would be an exciting and fulfilling role for you! CSIRO champions in providing a diverse and inclusive culture, supports flexible work arrangements, and offers you excellent professional development opportunities to grow your skills & career. Please note that the projects have already commenced, and therefore it would be ideal if you have the ability and willingness to commence this position with CSIRO by early-to-mid 2024 (ideally at least by June 2024). Your duties will include: Using expertise, knowledge of other disciplines, and research experience to lead the development of a digital spatial platform for agripest control in two large multi-agency projects, which includes formulating and executing a delivery plan for the development and applications of the digital spatial platform. Developing relationships across CSIRO and with external agency members of the project teams to deliver the agreed work plan. Negotiating resource requirements with managers, and managing technical staff to ensure plans and protocols are established following the research design and are completed within the agreed timeframes and budget. Acting as a trusted advisor, utilising knowledge of the client's business and understanding of their underlying needs, as well as anticipating industry needs and market direction through client liaison and networking. Demonstrating a considerable degree of originality, creativity, and innovation in solving problems and introducing new directions and approaches (for example, innovative methods to integrate multiple data streams and models into a spatial framework at the landscape scale). Communicating research results to clients and the scientific community through oral and written reports (where relevant), and contributing to & leading research papers in areas relating to the design, implementation, and use cases of digital decision-support for the area-wide management of agripest outbreaks, including management approaches. Location: Canberra (Black Mountain) ACT; or Brisbane (Dutton Park) QLD Salary: AU$121K – AU$142K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation Tenure: Specified Term of 4 years; Full-time Reference: 94407 To be considered you will need: A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field, such as digital agronomy, geographical information systems, pest risk mapping, and modelling, or computer science. Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems, especially experience integrating multiple data streams and models into a spatial framework at the landscape scale. Experience managing milestones across multiple projects and teams, with a diversity of collaborators, to deliver project outputs, including the management of project resources (time, budget, staff, reporting). Experience in research in agricultural contexts and/or agripest management. Demonstrated scientific impact through the publication of papers in peer-reviewed journals, and/or reports, data packages and platforms, and/or grant applications. Ability (or willingness to learn how) to communicate biosecurity risk indices and outputs of scenarios to industry representatives and gather information from them about their needs. Ability to work in a regionally dispersed team, which may include some travelling, as well as hold (or have the ability & willingness to obtain) a valid Australian driver's licence.
