The Position The successful person will work on the project "The copper mine of the future: Metal extraction from natural magmatic brines (CuBrine)", as part of the "Grand Challenge: Delivering future materials systems for energy transitions with integrity: Overcoming the Cu challenge", funded by the Rio Tinto Centre for Future Materials.
The project will investigate the conditions (pressure, temperature, S content, and oxygen fugacity) where Cu is soluble in active magmatic hydrothermal brines.
This will involve determining the oxygen fugacity of volcanic systems from the oxidation states of sulfur and iron and undertaking experiments to determine the solubility of copper.
The results will be used to understand whether brine that has exsolved from a magmatic system has the potential to host copper in a soluble form and to identify, target natural systems.
We aim to identify which volcanic systems have a high probability of hosting metal enriched d brine lenses, how these metal-enriched lenses might be identified, and what is the potential mass of copper available for extraction.
The successful person will be part of a dynamic team that involves researchers at Imperial College London (geophysics and numerical modelling) and the University of British Columbia (extraction methodologies).
