Job Description We are seeking a Lifestyle Editor for a 12-month fixed term contract. The Lifestyle Editor will play a leadership role in managing the day-to-day operations of our lifestyle team. You will oversee the content output of lifestyle reporters, ensuring that all stories meet the editorial standards and resonate with our audience. This includes pitching and refining story ideas across a range of topics such as personal health, relationships, fashion, and beauty during editorial conferences.
Reporting to the Head of Life, you will be responsible for assigning, shaping, and editing stories at every stage of the editorial process, collaborating closely with both in-house reporters and external contributors. Additionally, you will occasionally contribute by writing your own lifestyle content, ensuring a diverse and engaging mix of articles. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced editor with a passion for lifestyle journalism, strong editorial judgment, and the ability to lead and inspire a creative team.
The role can be based in Sydney or Melbourne.
In this role you will:
Manage day-to-day operations of lifestyle reporters, including assigning, editing, and scheduling stories. Pitch and manage Lifestyle content during daily news conferences, utilising runsheets to track progress. Field pitches from reporters and freelance contributors. Generate a variety of story ideas, including long-form profiles, trends, humor pieces, and exclusive book extracts. Monitor analytics and guide reporters in the process, focusing on story packaging, including image selection and headline creation. Collaborate proactively with social media, SEO, and homepage editor teams to promote Lifestyle content across platforms. Qualifications What we're looking for:
Proven expertise in editorial judgment, writing, and editing. A passion for lifestyle content, service journalism, and a strong instinct for identifying stories through a lifestyle lens. Familiarity with SEO best practices and understanding of various digital platforms. Enthusiasm for data-driven decision-making to engage both new and established audiences. Ability to work collaboratively across The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, and other national Metro teams. Excellent organisational and time management skills.
