About the role
As a Legal Support Officer, you will work within a small team delivering services in a very complex and intellectually challenging environment to support the provision of specialist legal advice and litigation services.

Your role will have a large focus on performing a range of legal and non-legal tasks to support the legal team.
Legal Support Officers are responsible for supporting procedural, clerical, administrative, and operational tasks.
They have a good understanding of the relevant areas of law and will undertake specialist or technical research/analysis and provide advice where appropriate.

As an APS5 Legal Support Officer in the Legal team, you will be expected to efficiently handle busy workloads and manage competing priorities effectively, whilst providing administrative and practical support to your colleagues.
The role offers the opportunity to develop and maintain collaborative/professional relationships – working in partnership with the business areas in delivery.
Legal Support Officers will be supported in their role by Lawyers and Senior Lawyers.

To be a good fit for this role you will require excellent communication skills, together with a high level of attention to detail, organisational skills, proven ability to work in a team environment, and strong client focus.

Accountabilities
As an APS5 Legal Support Officer , you will work under the direction and supervision of senior lawyers and be responsible for:
Providing high-level legal administrative support including document management and review, record keeping, database management, and workforce management.
Undertaking research and analysis, drafting routine legal documents, and preparing advice where required to support the agency's complex litigation matters.
Managing group mailboxes and responding to client enquiries in the first instance.
Contributing to continuous improvement activities to ensure work practices are compliant with relevant legislation and consistent with best practice.

Eligibility
Please note that this opportunity is open only to Australian Citizens.
The successful applicant must have, or be willing to undergo and maintain a security clearance to the level of Baseline as a condition of employment.
To satisfy character requirements, all AFSA employees must undergo a police records check.

Where a person has received a redundancy benefit from APS agency employment and their corresponding redundancy benefit period has not expired, they may be ineligible for employment.
Candidates may be required to complete work sample testing as part of this selection process.

This recruitment process is being used to fill a current ongoing position.
A merit pool of suitable candidates may be established as a result of this process to assist AFSA in filling similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions that may become available over the next 18 months from the date of the original advertisement.
