We are Australia's national institution for leadership inAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.
What we doWe care for a priceless collection, including films, photographs, video, and audio recordingsas well as the world's largest collection of printed and other resource materials forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. We undertake and encourage scholarly,ethical, community-based research in a variety of sectors, including health, native title,languages, and education. Our publishing house, Aboriginal Studies Press, regularlypublishes outstanding writing that promotes Australian Indigenous cultures.Our activities affirm and raise awareness of the richness and diversity of Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander cultures and histories.
Our functions are established under the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
These functions are to:• provide access to a national collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
culture and heritage.• use that national collection to strengthen and promote knowledge and
understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.• provide leadership in the fields of:
? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research; and? activities relating to collections associated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples; and use (including use for research) of that nationalcollection and other collections containing Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander culture and heritage.
• lead and promote collaborations and partnerships among the academic,research, non-government, business and government sectors andAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in support of the otherfunctions of the Institute.
• provide advice to the Commonwealth on the situation and status of Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

About the GroupThe purpose of the Research and Education Group (REG) is to define, lead, produce, share andsupport cutting edge research and learning by, with, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
About the Program AreaThe team sits within the Research and Education Group and has the lead in developing anational report on the situation and status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures andheritage. As a multistage project, the Situation and Status of Indigenous Cultures and Heritagereport (SSICH) is a complex project that aims to provide a comprehensive and dynamic insightinto the vitality of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This project is being developedwith the view to enable more effective policy making for advancing and supporting Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander people's cultural aspirations through providing publicly availableadvice on the status and outcomes of the state of Indigenous culture and heritage.
About the RoleWe are seeking a high performing and talented Director to lead the team. As Director you willwork collaboratively across AIATSIS to strategically shape AIATSIS' culture and future direction,including managing the biennial delivery of the Situation and Status of Indigenous Cultures andHeritage report (SSICH). You will be responsible for leading a small team to design andundertake a program of cutting-edge research and deliver on outcomes. The key duties of therole include:
• leading the development of a new national report on the situation and status ofAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage.
• developing and managing relationships with stakeholders, including the universitysector, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers and peak bodies, and othercultural institutions.
• overseeing the operations of the AIATSIS Indigenous Knowledge Exchange Platformknow as Yumi Sabe and its continued development.
• providing expert advice and coordinating the review, contribution and production ofhigh-quality research and cultural publications and resources for a range of audiences toa high standard.
• providing complex written reports, submissions and correspondence as well asdeveloping and managing the program workplan, budget and reporting functions.
• representing AIATSIS at various forums and events.

The ideal candidate will come with the skills, experience and attributes shown below:
• proven ability to shape strategic thinking, provide critical advice, and solve complexissues.
• demonstrated experience providing high level expert advice on professional, technical,and administrative matters, including on culture and heritage.
• previous experience producing complex written documents including strategic andbusiness plans, program report, reports, briefs, submissions, and operational reports.
• demonstrated ability to cultivate and nurture productive working relationships withinternal and external stakeholders.
• proven ability to communicate with influence including strong interpersonal, negotiation,liaison, and collaborative skills.
• demonstrated ability to lead, contribute to, or present at, various network andstakeholder meetings, forums, and conferences.
• experience leading and inspiring teams through exceptional people management,resilience, and capability to manage competing priorities, including a commitment toachieving results and seeing projects through to completion.
• a strong understanding of Indigenous culture and heritage policy and substantialqualifications and/or work experience in an area relevant to the work of the ICP team.
