The Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner (VLSB+C) is the independent regulator of the legal profession in Victoria. It licenses lawyers and oversees service standards and conduct, including handling complaints about lawyers, investigating poor conduct and overseeing management of trust accounts. It is the steward of the Public Purpose and Fidelity Funds and administers these to support legal regulation and access to justice in Victoria.The Legal & Investigations division deploys a fascinating and broad range of investigatory and regulatory functions and tools to protect consumers of legal services, improve legal practice and ethics and enhance access to justice.Two new Director roles for senior, skilled lawyers have been created: Director, Discipline & Suitability and Director, Detection and Intervention. Each reports to the Director of the Legal & Investigations division. The emphasis is on close collaboration between the new leaders to ensure that investigative priorities and approaches are aligned to maximise holistic, timely and impact-focused delivery. Contact with the Commissioner, the wider leadership team and external stakeholders is significant.Director, Discipline & SuitabilityAssisted by two managers, this Director leads a team skilled in disciplinary investigations and prosecutions, suitability investigations, refusal, suspension or cancellation of practising certificates and applications to the Supreme Court to strike off lawyers. There is a large component of litigation and legal advice work across the Division.Director, Detection & InterventionThis role is responsible for two teams: Early Detection & Prevention and Intervention & Enforcement, each led by a manager.Responsibilities include delivery of the early intervention strategy, generating leads through data analysis and undertaking trust account and compliance audits. The Director also oversees the appointment of external intervenors to law practices, for example following very serious conduct, and investigates claims against the Fidelity Fund.The Intervention & Enforcement team handles criminal investigations and prosecutions that are often complex, high profile and sensitive and involve liaison with law enforcement agencies.These opportunities will attract highly skilled lawyers keen to make a difference within a values-driven, innovative and flexible organization.
