About the team The Data Scientist will collaborate closely with the Lead Data Scientist and the broader Data Science and Performance and Analytics teams.
You will work with Business Partners to communicate complex data and algorithms clearly and effectively, ensuring a consultative and customer-focused approach.
About your new role As a Data Scientist, you will design innovative solutions and derive insights from large structured and unstructured data sets, utilising the centralised capabilities of the Performance and Analytics team.
You will address business problems with advanced technical solutions, collaborate closely with senior stakeholders to ensure scalable deployment, and champion best practices in data science.
Your role includes identifying opportunities to advance the City's data capabilities, guiding projects from prototype to implementation, providing technical leadership, mentoring graduate data scientists, and enhancing the team's performance to support strategic decisions.
Additionally, you will collaborate with key Business Partners to address their needs and foster a culture of health, safety, and well-being within the team.
We're looking for people who have: At least 2+ years of relevant work experience in data science, advanced analytics, and/or deep learning in an enterprise-grade data analytics setting. Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R, with extensive experience in modernized data science platforms.
An understanding of object-oriented programming is desirable. Strong knowledge or skills with CI/CD (e.g., Git, Gitlab, Jenkins, Bitbucket, etc.
). Advanced SQL skills and experience with relational databases and database design. Strong foundation in using statistical methods to analyse data and draw actionable insights. Demonstrable expertise in data science domains, such as Machine Learning, advanced analytics and modelling, Deep Learning, modern NLP (including applications of transfer learning), image processing, or object detection. Experience with current machine learning and advanced modelling techniques and algorithms. Experience working with cloud Data Warehouse solutions (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Azure) and a working knowledge of cloud-based solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP). Effective communication skills in translating complex data findings into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
The ability to present findings in a clear and compelling manner through reports, presentations, and data storytelling. Strategic mindset with the ability to align data initiatives with the City's Insights Driven Organisation Plan. Ability to identify opportunities for data-driven improvements and contribute to the overall strategic vision. Strong problem-solving skills in identifying key issues and proposing data-driven solutions in line with best practice data science standards. Focused on achieving tangible results that contribute to maturing the city's capability into becoming an Insights Driven Organisation.
