Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and well-rounded Engineer to join our outstanding Risk Engineering team based in Sydney or Melbourne, although other BHSI Australian office locations will be considered for the right candidate.
This role is responsible for supporting the property underwriting team with desktop account reviews, onsite evaluations, and client/broker meetings for a diverse portfolio of engineered risks.
The role will offer exposure to a wide variety of accounts, ranging in size, hazards, and complexity as part of day-to-day activity. It will also have a focus on construction and project-related risks, so this role is perfect for a highly motivated engineer who seeks diversity of role and an interest in complex and technically challenging risks.
The position reports directly into the National Manager of Risk Engineering, and the successful candidate will collaborate and provide support to the Property Underwriting Team, particularly Construction technical line underwriters, to help grow a healthy book of business through engineered risk selection and understanding.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Evaluate complex risks and exposures by conducting thoughtful and technical account/project risk reviews. Attend onsite evaluations where needed for underwriting purposes. Collaborate with Underwriters on new business opportunities and during the renewal process. Contribute to the development of technical resources and engineering guidelines. Create content and other resources to address emerging and changing risks. Participate in customer and broker meetings to strengthen our relationships and deliver our value-add proposition. Work with the BHSI Claims team on technical matters. Support other lines of business as needed. Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Bachelor (or higher) degree in Engineering or equivalent experience. 5+ years risk engineering experience. Knowledgeable in various occupancies as well as FM Data Sheets/NFPA codes and Australian Standards. Excellent knowledge of the construction industry, including experience of working onsite. Adept at assessing and reporting property and engineering risk issues and loss estimates. Mature & self-confident; able to work with customers, business partners, or internal stakeholders. Excellent communication skills. Ability to produce concise and accurate technical information in a timely manner. Ability to multi-task and make quick decisions while maintaining integrity and quality standards. Have a strong desire to build something that adds long-term value to a forever business. Ability to travel – up to 20% of time, largely self-directed, across Australia. BHSI Offers:
