Medical Communications Pty Ltd is a leading Australian professional medical publisher producing a 67-year-old flagship clinical journal, Medicine Today, and a portfolio of sister titles, all published in print and online. The peer-reviewed content, written by invited clinician experts, includes feature reviews, brief clinics, monographs, editorials and news.

Medicine Today is seeking one or two (depending on hours worked) qualified, experienced Assistant Editor/Subeditors to join its team of editors.

Key Requirements A degree in medicine, pharmacy, nursing or the biomedical sciences and a solid understanding of biomedicine is absolutely essential. An additional degree in English Literature or journalism would be highly advantageous. A minimum of two years proven experience in scientific or medical editing within a publishing environment. Technical knowledge and research skills. Strong skills in English expression, grammar and syntax. English will be your first language. Confidence in liaising with clinical experts and specialist authors. Highly organised, able to meet deadlines and comfortable working both independently and in a team. Adaptable and willing to take on new and different responsibilities as they arise. A working knowledge of Adobe InDesign would be useful but is not essential. Experience in online content development and familiarity with content management systems would be advantageous. You will be good humoured, but determined and persuasive, enabling you to ensure deadlines are met by the authors and the reviewers. You are creative, full of new ideas and enthusiasm and have an eagle eye for detail, striving for editorial perfection. Key Responsibilities This role involves everything from commissioning articles and editorials from expert consultants, to managing the peer-review process and confidently dealing with authors and reviewers, through to substantive sub-editing, sourcing illustrative material, proof-reading and checking page layouts. You will also assist with website content management and the preparation and checking of our online continuing professional development program. You will work with a small, friendly, multi-skilled team. There is a creative element to the role with the opportunity to write occasional news pieces, article summaries, management algorithms and other short pieces. Your strong knowledge of medical topics will enable you to assist the team in planning content appropriate to the audience with confidence and to be totally at ease researching subjects and commissioning and briefing specialist authors. Rewards/Benefits An excellent salary will be negotiated based on experience and generous annual bonuses are paid at Christmas time. Our office is located in vibrant Neutral Bay on Sydney's beautiful Lower North Shore, only 10 minutes from the city centre and home to excellent eateries, bars, pubs and boutiques. The office is on a public bus route and all day street parking is available only a short walk away. We treat our staff to Christmas celebrations at some of Sydney's great restaurants, to Melbourne Cup Race Day celebrations, and to frequent staff lunches and drinks at the famous Oaks Hotel, a few paces from our office. We are open to flexible working hours and to splitting time spent working in the office and from home. For a highly experienced candidate we would consider contracting you to work remotely from your home country for now and later arranging to bring you to Australia under a business sponsorship visa. Job Type: Full-time preferred but part timers and contractors also considered.

Pay: $70,000.00 – $95,000.00 per year

Expected hours: 20 – 38 per week
