Accounting Investigations & Regulation Advisor

Details of the offer

Accounting Investigations & Regulation AdvisorAre you an experienced accounting professional (CA or CPA) or financial professional looking to transition into a new role? This may just be the role for you. This role combines your technical accounting knowledge, risk management lens, investigative curiosity, and a desire to assist others in defining the right processes internally to create robust and compliant systems.
The Organisation The ACT Law Society is the peak body for legal practitioners in the ACT. The Society represents, advances, and defends the interests of an independent legal profession in the ACT. They also protect the public interest in the ACT system of justice through efficient regulation of the profession as a whole, including trust accounting within firms across the ACT.
2024 has seen the ACT Law Society move into an exciting phase of growth and capability development across their regulatory function. With this growth comes opportunity. This brand new role will be pivotal in the development of the Society's internal function to audit, regulate, advise, and assist their members in building robust and compliant trust accounting processes and systems across the ACT.
How will it work? Reporting to a knowledgeable and supportive Regulatory Manager, you will also have the full support, guidance, and training of the Finance & Business Services Manager to develop your knowledge of trust accounting and the legislation that governs it. Your functions will be diverse. Your technical accounting skills will enable you to fully investigate trust account reconciliations to identify errors, but it is your analytical problem-solving that will enable you to identify the errors and spot patterns and trends.
Naturally curious, you will work with your members to establish processes and systems in their firms to increase compliance and reduce errors. You bring exceptional stakeholder and client engagement skills and are comfortable switching between providing support to achieve the required outcomes and enforcing regulatory compliance activities where required.
Reporting of outcomes regarding non-compliance with legislative requirements and suspected improper applications of trust money will be a key deliverable. You are able to write in a professional manner, detailing both facts and impact, and ensuring clarity of recommendations.
With a commitment to continuous improvement, you enjoy training others, comfortable teaching one-on-one, as well as confident in the delivery of regular sessions to build on the knowledge of trust accounting in practice leaders across the ACT's legal sector.
What are we looking for in our successful candidate? Your financial accounting skills are non-negotiable, you are either CA or CPA qualified (or in your final year of completion) enabling you to supervise and intervene in external random inspections as required. You are very comfortable forensically analysing ledgers and reconciliations from a risk management perspective.
Legal trust accounting knowledge is not required - this will be a key part of your training. Experience in financial accounting within small business or non-profit environments will be highly regarded and transferable. Exposure to audit, investigations, insolvency, or even senior bookkeeping will also be beneficial.
What's in it for you? Flexibility—this can be full-time or reduced hours, designed by you with the support of your manager;A standard full-time equivalent work week of 35 hours and additional paid leave over the Christmas shutdown period; One 'Wellness Day' every 6 months to help maintain a healthy work-life balance;A brand-new office to move into in early 2025 in the city centre! This is a great opportunity if you're a certified accountant looking for something outside the box. Please apply now to be considered, uploading your CV and a brief cover letter detailing why you are a great fit for this role.
