Details of the offer

2026 Census Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Coordination Officer (EL1) The Australian Bureau of Statistics is looking to fill the role of 2026 Census Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Coordination Officer (EL1) (Affirmative Measure - First Nations).
About the area Every five years, the ABS counts every person and household in Australia. We call this the Census of Population and Housing (the Census). The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of the country and tells the story of how we are changing. Census data tells us about the economic, social, and cultural make-up of the country. It is the only source of information for small geographic areas and small population groups for the entire country.
It's important that everyone is counted in the Census to reflect the diversity of Australia. The diverse lifestyles we lead mean that the ABS needs to consider how to make completing the Census as easy as possible for everyone. The Census is a major exercise that takes around six years to plan, develop, test, implement, deliver, and disseminate the information collected.
The ABS has established a dedicated team to run the 2026 Census Program consisting of 12 projects across the statistical cycle including teams focused on collection, communications, digital services, data processing, and dissemination.
The Census team is committed to improving the quality and relevance of Census data to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The team is planning to deploy a suite of activities to enable and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to participate in the 2026 Census.
About the role This role is only open to people who identify and are recognised as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, under the Affirmative Measures Guidelines. This is your opportunity to play a critical role in ensuring the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander voice and needs are embedded into our work outputs.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Coordination Officer role for the 2026 Census of Population and Housing provides cultural support and guidance to Census staff who plan, design, develop, and execute the Census suite of activities, ultimately enabling and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to effectively participate in the Census. You will work in collaboration with Census Project teams and internal partners, including the ABS Centre of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics.
Responsibilities include: Helping the Census to harmoniously plan and execute consistent support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Providing guidance and support for the implementation of Census strategies and work plans. Advising Census Projects on implementation and monitoring of the Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data and the ABS Reconciliation Action Plan. Providing support in building cultural capability, safety, and integrity amongst Census teams. Working in collaboration with Census Project teams and internal partners to create and implement the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Census Strategy. What we are looking for (selection criteria) To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities, and experience:
Building and keeping strong relationships. Collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to develop and provide cultural advice and perspectives. Identifying aspects of projects and initiatives that will impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. Coordinating, monitoring, and reporting on pieces of work across different projects and initiatives. Communicating and presenting information to diverse audiences. Being motivated, adaptive, organised, and good at managing competing demands. Demonstrating and fostering a strong, inclusive, diverse, trusting, and collaborative team culture. An understanding of the ABS Census of Population and Housing would be an advantage.
Applications close at 11:30 p.m. AEDT on Wednesday 30 October 2024 . Late applications will not be accepted.
