The Opportunity:
The SSE provides strategic and tactical safety management and safety engineering services in support of the Materiel Certification (MC) and Introduction Into Service (IIS) of capabilities acquired through the CIED Acquisition Program. The SSE has a level of technical authority that permits drafting and reviewing of key systems safety and technical documentation. The SSE coordinates Systems Safety Working Groups (SSWGs) and fosters a collaborative safety culture and the sharing of safety knowledge within the CIED Acquisition Program.
Responsibilities

Support development and ratification of the System Safety Program Plan (SSPP)
Enact the SSPP including proactive management of system safety engineering activities
Conduct safety risk assessments in support of key project activities
Provide input to the development of technical specifications and related acquisition contract or tender documentation
Support contract negotiations and tender evaluation activities, as required
Review contractor safety deliverables and Objective Quality Evidence
Conduct and/or participate in mandated system reviews and capability acceptance activities
Conduct safety activities in support of the planning, conduct and reporting of T&E activities
Develop Safety Case Reports (SCRs) and Hazard/Risk Logs for CIED capabilities
Coordinate and/or participate in program and project safety forums including SSWGs, liaising with key Defence and external safety stakeholders
Support planning for transition of CIED capabilities into service
Contribute to project meetings and working groups
Conduct safety activities in support of the MC and IIS of CIED capabilities, which may include:
Relevant hazard analyses
Safety Data Sheet review and update
Risk assessment of hazardous chemicals and Problematic Items of Supply (PIOS)
Certification of lasers and LEDs
Electrical safety assessments
Radiation hazard assessments
Software safety assessments
Platform integration and interface management
Safety input to technical and logistics publications, training activities and doctrine updates

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential:

Current (or ability to immediately gain) Technical Proficiency Level 4, holding an accredited or recognised 4-year engineering degree and has completed a minimum of 3 years of engineering experience after completing the degree
Demonstrated application and working knowledge of systems safety in accordance with WHS Legislation, MIL-STD-882E and Defence/CASG policies
Verifiable recent systems safety engineering experience in Defence projects within the One Defence Capability System
Recent experience in the development and management of technical systems safety engineering artefacts
Have an Australian Government Security Clearance – Minimum NV1.

Desirable:

Technical Proficiency Level 3 (Registered Engineer)
Be a Chartered Professional Engineer through Engineers Australia, registered on the Engineering Register
Relevant experience in the Defence Joint or Land Domain within the past 5 years
A solid understanding of the Defence Land Materiel Safety Manual
Experience in assessing PIOS, prohibited substances and hazardous chemicals
Specific knowledge and experience in specialist areas such as non-ionising radiation (ie. lasers and LEDs), radiofrequency radiation, mechanical/electrical engineering, communications systems, T&E/V&V, and/or platform integration
Be certified as a Defence Laser Safety Officer Level 1 (LSO1)
Be certified as a Defence Radiofrequency Radiation Safety Officer Level 1 (RFRSO1)
