Statistics and Modeling Epidemiologist 3 (Non-Medical) This is a permanent position with the flexibility to work from home.
The Center for Health Statistics (CHS) is Washington State's hub for vital records and health data. We collect and manage essential information on births, deaths, marriages, and more, ensuring that individuals have access to critical documents needed for identity and legal purposes. Our work also supports public health research and decision-making, providing the state with accurate data on health behaviors, risk factors, and hospitalizations. CHS is committed to inclusivity, offering services like legal name changes and expanded sex designation options.
What You Will Do: As an Epidemiologist 3 at CHS, you will independently tackle advanced data analysis and system development to enhance our vital records and health data capabilities. Your role includes creating innovative solutions for data collection, management, and dissemination, as well as supporting public health emergency preparedness. You'll use your expertise in epidemiology and data science to develop statistical models, improve data interoperability, and ensure the accuracy and accessibility of critical health information.
Expectations and Responsibilities:
Independently identify, design, develop, and implement advanced programming solutions for vital records data collection, management, analysis, and dissemination.Utilize advanced data management and programming tools (e.g., R, Python, SQL) to develop processes for vital records data.Collaborate with CHS staff to create processes for real-time vital records data reporting for emergency response.Lead or participate in designing and implementing public health information systems.Develop and enhance approaches to data dissemination, including automated reporting, in collaboration with other DOH programs.Develop or oversee use cases, business process documentation, and workflow analyses for information system development.Document work processes, data attributes, and system attributes.Plan and oversee the implementation, development, enhancement, and maintenance of health information systems.Support the advancement of WHALES to the cloud and improve overall data system interoperability.Consult as an expert and provide training to public health information system users and stakeholders.Collaborate with federal, state, and local public health officials, government officials, and researchers.Lead, propose, design, and supervise epidemiological studies and analyses using CHS data.Utilize advanced epidemiologic, mathematical, and statistical methods to conduct studies and support CHS investigations.Initiate and conduct non-routine data analyses to identify quality improvement areas in vital records data.Assess and determine implications of processes and results on data, programs, and stakeholders.Identify methods and improvements to enhance data collection, analysis, and reporting for better health equity.Review peer-reviewed literature to support data analysis.Interpret and format results for internal and external stakeholders.Prepare and present research study results through reports, fact sheets, infographics, oral presentations, or scientific journal articles.You Will Be Successful at the DOH If:  You embrace cultural humility by honoring diverse perspectives and cultures.You are committed to equity and inclusion, removing barriers, championing social justice, and fostering a sense of belonging.You use an outward mindset to make impactful contributions, blending your personal expertise with collaborative achievements.You excel at problem-solving and crafting effective solutions while communicating clearly across different mediums.You are dedicated to customer service and navigate diverse interactions to build strong organizational relationships.Your technical competence shines, making you an invaluable asset to our team!Location and Flexibility  We value work-life balance and offer the convenience of remote work! This position will give you the option to work from home or from the closest DOH facility. Attending in-person events or working in-office is rarely required and would be scheduled in advance. This is a remote home-based position available to applicants residing anywhere in Washington State, as well as those living near the Oregon/Washington border and the Idaho/Washington border.
What We're looking for – Required Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, you must meet one of the required qualification options listed and any additional qualifications included in the required qualifications section. Education can substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Option 1: Eight (8) years of experience in epidemiology, data science, public health data analysis, or closely related field.Option 2: Bachelor's Degree in epidemiology, data science, public health, math, statistics, social sciences, or closely related field with coursework in epidemiology, data science, statistics, research, research design, biostatistics, or closely related areas; AND four (4) years of experience in epidemiology, data science, public health data analysis, or closely related field.A Master's degree in one of the above areas will account for 2 years of experienceA PhD in the above areas will account for 4 years of experience.And the following Experience Two (2) years of experience using quantitative and data management software such as R, Python, and Julia.Three years (3) experience working with large SQL databases.Three years (3) experience performing complex statistical and machine learning analyses such as regression analysis, neural network modeling, network analysis, and time series analysis.Demonstrated experience using statistical and modeling frameworks such as PyTorch, Scikit-Learn, and R utilities for regression analyses (lm, glm, mgcv, etc.).Demonstrated knowledge of statistical distributions such as Poisson, binomial, negative binomial, normal, and joint probability distributions.Preferred Qualifications: The qualifications below are what would make you a strong fit for this role.
