The Epidemiology, Surveillance and Laboratory Section provides epidemiological, diagnostic and other scientific expertise to support evidence-based policies, strategies, programs, standards and activities for animal disease preparedness and response as well as trade and market access. This includes providing leadership and coordination to strengthen national animal health surveillance and laboratory systems and networks.
The Job The key responsibilities include:
Develop and communicate policies and programs, especially relevant to exotic production animal disease surveillance, preparedness and response. Provide advice on risk management strategies for exotic production animal or improvements to national regulatory and policy frameworks. Develop and manage projects within the department and/or through collaboration with external stakeholders and providers, including procurement and grant management. Represent the department on various committees and forums to engage with governments, industries and/or other stakeholders and address national agenda. Provide input into the development or review of international policy and technical standards for trade in animals and their products as required. Prepare briefings, correspondence, reports, and media releases as required. Supervise staff and manage secretariat support to relevant national committees and working groups. What we are looking for Knowledge and experience The following will be well regarded:
Sound knowledge of Australia's production animal industries, animal health systems and biosecurity legislation. Working knowledge or experience in epidemiology, disease surveillance, biosecurity risk assessment and/or emergency disease preparedness and response. Practical knowledge or experience in developing and implementing policies, programs and/or projects for strategic biosecurity objectives. Sound knowledge or experience in managing and delivering science programs and projects. Mandatory qualifications Applicants must possess a veterinary degree and must be currently registered or eligible for registration with a relevant Australian State or Territory Veterinary Surgeons Board.
