You will provide professional prosecution services, including provision of legal advice to members of the Service on matters before the Magistrates, Childrens and Coroners Courts. Cairns Police Prosecution Corps has combined teams of both sworn and civilian prosecutors, supported by administration staff.
The position offers a broad level of experience across all Magistrates Court criminal matters, with circuit courts providing an added dimension to the role. The position requires the supervision of subordinate staff.
Prosecutors are responsible for police related matters in the Cairns Magistrates Court District in addition to servicing the circuit Magistrates Courts at Cooktown, Lockhart River, Aurukun, Coen, Hope Vale, Weipa, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama and Wujal Wujal. The satellite office of Thursday Island services Thursday Island Magistrates Court in addition to the Torres Circuit Courts.
Your Key Accountabilities Provide a prosecution service for the area of responsibility. Monitor the provision of briefs of evidence by police for use in summary trials and for committal proceedings to ensure the highest quality of briefs is maintained. Liaise, consult and negotiate with members of the Queensland Police Service, the legal profession, government agencies and the community towards the establishment of effective working relationships and achievement of desired policing outcomes. Take a lead role in the development and provision of quality legal research, argument, submissions, opinion and advice. Manage resources in accordance with Service policy to achieve efficient operations for the area of responsibility. Establish and model maintain high standards of performance and conduct in daily work activities. May include coordination activities for Specialist Courts and diversionary initiatives as directed by the Superintendent. Role Requirements Mandatory Admission as, eligibility for immediate admission as, or entitlement to practice as, a legal practitioner in the State of Queensland.
