An exciting opportunity to join the QPS State Mental Health Team, which provides strategic governance, policy advice, and project coordination to improve policing responses to mental health and crises.

The Senior Policy Officer works with internal and external stakeholder on policy related to mental health and crises.

This challenging and rewarding role provides well researched guidance and advice, in alignment with legislation, to senior leaders, as well as operational police. You will also contribute to development and implementation of whole of government strategies and policies.

The Core Capability Requirements for this role are: Provide high quality, well-researched advice to senior management in relation to issues effecting policing of intersections with mental health and crises and respond to such issues by developing effective policy options and strategies.Perform project and research tasks aimed at the investigation, analysis and evaluation of issues affecting policing intersections with mental health and crises.Contribute as part of a multi-disciplinary team to the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of Whole of Government strategies and Queensland Police Service strategic and operational plans related to policing intersections with mental health and crises.Monitor, evaluate and review policies, legislation, and practices across Government and within the Queensland Police Service, which impact on policing intersections with mental health and crises and liaise and negotiate with those agencies to achieve an appropriate holistic response.Prepare correspondence, briefings and submissions for senior management, the Minister, Cabinet and other diverse audiences regarding policing intersections with mental health and crises.Produce timely and accurate information to be used for the purpose of evaluating programs, providing a basis for planning and policy development, and the assessment of legislative impacts on policing intersections with mental health and crises.Consult and liaise effectively with other areas of the Queensland Police Service and relevant Government departments and non-government organisations on mental health and crises issues, as appropriate, and represent the Queensland Police Service on inter-agency forums.Role Requirements:  Technical/ Operational/ Educational Experience It is desirable to have: Subject matter knowledge of Mental Health, including legislation (e.g., the Mental Health Act).The ability to advocate for, and negotiate QPS mental health policing strategic and operational priorities with internal and external stakeholders.The ability to present to audiences from diverse backgrounds.Other Applicants are advised that whilst performing the duties of the position they may be exposed to material (written, visual and audio) of a graphic and sensitive nature.The successful applicant may be required to work within any Group/Unit or location within the Brisbane area where business is conducted.Travel away from Brisbane may occasionally be required. Applications to remain current for 12 months.
