A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced litigator to work in-house as Senior Advocate for Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) based in the Melbourne CBD.

About the role
In this role, you will be responsible for litigating and prosecuting significant and complex matters on behalf of the Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria in contraventions of legislation administered by CAV in a range of jurisdictions. Reporting to the General Manager, Legal Services, you will be a senior member of the Legal Services Branch, which consists of 10 professional staff and sits within the Regulatory Services Division. As Senior Advocate, you will be responsible for providing advocacy services associated with CAV's compliance and enforcement functions. You will deliver at a state-wide specialist level high quality legal advice, particularly on sensitive and critical enforcement actions within CAV's enforcement framework and provide support and advice to the Director and CAV's Compliance Committee on compliance outcomes. You will conduct complex court proceedings and provide high level legal analysis and advice on a range of consumer law issues in both civil and criminal jurisdictions. The position also takes a leadership role in the Division working within a team- based environment and supports staff in legal aspects in conducting sensitive and complex investigations and other compliance and enforcement activities. You will support the overall conduct of enforcement actions in a dynamic environment, including coordination of legal action with other federal and state enforcement agencies.
As our ideal candidate, you will have:
demonstrated experience in prosecuting/litigating complex and sensitive criminal and civil cases in a range of jurisdictions
experience managing legal work in a complex environment including liaison with investigators and other state and federal bodies
experience in supporting investigations and in the preparation of and appearances in civil and criminal litigation in complex matters
capacity to lead and mentor the professional development of legal practitioners to achieve the strategic enforcement aims of CAV
experience in directing legal research and demonstrated ability to develop and direct innovative responses to new and emerging issues.
