This is a unique, complex and large-scale leadership role that influences policies, services and payments that assist Australians at every stage of their lives.
The Secretary is the principal official policy adviser to the Minister for Social Services, Minister for Government Services and the Minister for Housing and Homelessness. The role leads more than 3000 staff to shape a sustainable social security system; contribute to stronger and more resilient families and communities; support the independence of people with disability and carers; and ensure access to safe and secure housing. The role works in close partnership with agencies across the Social Services portfolio, including Services Australia and the National Disability Insurance Agency, who together oversee payments and programs worth more than $150 billion a year. As a member of the Secretaries Board, the Secretary plays a key stewardship role across the Australian Public Service.
Suitable candidates will have extensive experience as a senior executive of a relevant public, private or for purpose organisation. They will be exemplary leaders with the capacity to advise and support multiple Ministers. They will demonstrate systems-leadership capability, judgement and integrity. To be competitive, candidates will need to possess strategy and delivery expertise along with the ability to work in genuine partnership with communities, government and non-government organisations.
