About AIMS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is Australia's tropical marine research agency.
We are a trusted advisor, a partner and employer of choice, and we value integrity, innovation, collaboration and respect.
AIMS' research of Australia's tropical marine ecosystems guides their effective environmental management and contributes to our understanding of similar ecosystems around the world.
Our research seeks to deliver practical benefit to all Australians and supports the sustainable use of our tropical marine estate.
Governments, reef managers, industry and the wider community look to our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions about our iconic Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf, and Arafura and Timor Seas.
AIMS expert teams at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique datasets, cutting-edge laboratories, and a fleet of modern research vessels.
About this exciting opportunity

Technical Officers are key members of the AIMS National Sea Simulator (SeaSim) team.
Under the operational leadership of the Senior Technical Officer, you will provide high-quality experimental support to contribute to research outputs.
You will be responsible for assisting in the operation, optimisation and maintenance of life support systems and the development, construction, operation and maintenance of systems for scientific experiments.
You will carry out activities to build, establish, test and commission systems for experimentation, holding, propagation and breeding of marine organisms for use in research programs within the AIMS National Sea Simulator.
Your position will see you provide direct operational input and support in the operation and maintenance of the SeaSim facility, including accessing SCADA for daily operation and alarm identification, taking action as needed.
Who are we looking for?

A perfect opportunity for someone who has an interest in working with live animals, building systems, using new technologies and creating efficiencies, and who is looking to start or continue a career in aquaculture.
You might have had experience working in a hatchery environment or plumbing trade.
Or have your own personal aquarium or experience with tanks.
Or be interested in the industry, committed to animal welfare and helping to support our research to protect our unique tropical marine ecosystems.

What experience do I need?

We are flexible in the experience you need to have to join our team, as we want someone passionate and interested in providing experimental support to our research projects.
You might have a tertiary qualification, a trade or experience in a relevant field (plumbing, fitter, hatchery, aquaculture, technical role etc.)
where you have been involved in the construction, modification and commissioning of complex systems.
You will need to have good technical skills, a high degree of initiative and excellent problem-solving abilities, and have the capabilities needed for setting up experiments and building holding systems for marine organisms.
Your ability to work independently will be fundamental for ensuring that the facility and experiments are supported on a continuous basis, including participating in a roster arrangement and having the flexibility and capacity to work weekends and public holidays.
