Details of the offer

Location: Melbourne | Northern Metropolitan
Job type: Full time / 2 Years
Organisation: Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action
Occupation: Science
Reference: VG/50959261A
We are seeking a postdoctoral research scientist with experience in genomic selection and genome-wide association analysis to join our dynamic team and make a significant individual contribution to cutting-edge research for grain crop (cereals, oilseeds and pulses) and forest tree (eucalypt and pine) genetic improvement. Our team focusses on developing and implementing innovative tools, methods and pipelines to enhance predictive breeding capabilities in pre-breeding research and breeding.
In this role you will develop and implement genotype-by-environment (GxE) genomic prediction models using phenotypic data that spans multiple Australian agriculture production regions and years for key crop traits. You will also develop AI-augmented genomics-assisted plant pre-breeding programs to enrich germplasm for these traits using advanced algorithms that are demonstrated in real and simulated data. You will apply genome-wide association analysis for trait improvement. You will deliver on specific research milestones for large, collaborative, industry co-funded projects. You will contribute to the delivery of science outcomes for multiple projects. The position offers a unique opportunity to fast track the latest research in genetics and genomics into industry applications.
You will have proven experience in quantitative genetics and/or statistical genomics in applications relevant to plant breeding, as well as a demonstrated ability to code proficiently in C++, Fortran, Python or R (the latter preferred) and experience in operating in a Linux computing environment. You will have excellent organisational and communication skills, both verbal and written, and be able to effectively communicate key findings to a broad range of stakeholders. You will have a publication track record, be passionate about science and have a strong commitment to delivering high-quality, high-impact and innovative science outcomes for industry. Publishing in key international journals and supervising staff and higher degree research students is expected and encouraged.
The position is located at AgriBio (a state-of-the-art biosciences research centre) within the Applied Genomics and Predictive Breeding team, which has expertise in quantitative genetics, statistical genomics, bioinformatics, statistics, biology, phenomics, rapid cycle ('speed') breeding and high-performance computing. You will be part of the Plant Sciences unit, which has 60+ scientist and technical staff.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications Essential: A PhD in Animal or Plant Breeding, Genetics, Quantitative Genetics, Computer Science, Statistical Genomics or relevant field.  Desirable: Experience analysing genomic and phenotypic data collected from across multiple environments and years to deal with G×E interactions. This is a fixed term position available for a period of 2 years. The work location for this position is AgriBio Bundoora with hybrid work arrangements available. To be considered for this position, applicants are encouraged to submit a resume and cover letter (no longer than 2 pages) summarising their skills and relevant experience.
For further information please refer to the attached position description.
Applications close at midnight on Tuesday, 11 June 2024. Other relevant information: Preferred candidates will be required to undertake pre-employment screening, including a Declaration and Consent form and a National Police Check.
To be eligible for appointment to this role, applicants will possess corresponding work rights for the advertised employment period. Appointment to an ongoing position is only available to an Australian/New Zealand citizen or an Australian Permanent Resident.
