Company Description The project is linked with a larger existing project on Livelihoods in Forest Ecosystem Recovery (LIFER) funded by the Australian Research Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
As such, the successful applicant will have support from a diverse team of academics and project partners both in Australia and in the Solomon Islands.
The central aim of LIFER is to learn how to efficiently restore forests to meet critical needs of rural Solomon Islanders, accelerating and channelling forest development to support livelihoods.
A second aim is to support positive leadership in forest governance to secure remaining forests and those restored.
The successful applicant will be enrolled in the School of Environment and Science at Griffith University and be based at the Nathan Campus in Brisbane, Queensland.
The candidate will be supervised by a multi-disciplinary team.
Job Description For a generation of Solomon Islanders, logging affected every aspect of life and, as a form of development, was extremely gendered.
We are looking for a PhD candidate to explore what happened to village livelihoods during this era, how people are moving forward and how opportunities for sustainable and equitable futures can be maximised.
A range of themes and topics are possible to explore within this broad framework of reforestation and livelihoods in the Solomon Islands.
The specific aims of the PhD research can be tailored to fit with the skills and interests of the successful applicant.
Qualifications The selection of applicants for the award of higher degree research scholarships at Griffith University involves consideration of your academic merit and research background.
To be successful in this role, ideally you will be a Solomon Islander, or have strong existing connections with the region and fluency in Solomon Islands Pijin, and be able to commence by early 2025.
You will have a passion for improving livelihoods in Solomon Island communities and a strong desire to undertake research that contributes to this goal.

Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a bachelors degree with honours equivalent to first class honours or a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component of a standard comparable to a bachelor honours degree or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment in accordance with Schedule One of the HDR Scholarship Procedure.
