What you'd be doing in this role As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA. Below are the current focuses of this role:
Building user-driven ML features for Canva's Video editor. Hands-on ML algorithmic work involving audio and/or visual cues. Engineering implementation: developing and implementing ML models and features, as well as using third-party APIs and pre-trained models when appropriate. Running offline and online experiments. Contributing to the full life cycle of ML/data models: data analysis, data preprocessing and pipeline, modelling, tuning and productisation. Improving the scalability, speed and performance of existing models. Working alongside data specialists, software engineers and product owners to identify business and growth opportunities. Sharing and articulating statistical analysis, modelling, experiments, and results to technical and non-technical audiences. You're probably a match if Proven industry experience in a machine learning/software engineering role. Experience building and deploying machine learning models in a cloud environment. Strong understanding of end-to-end machine learning pipelines and components. Strong coding proficiency in Python. Familiarity with some of the following: TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Kubernetes, Docker, Solr/ElasticSearch. Previous experience with computer vision/multi-modal approaches. Experience with LLMs/Diffusion models is preferred. Strong research skills: the ability to translate deep learning literature into product and value for users. Strong understanding of Computer Science/Engineering fundamentals covering system design, data structures, architecture, and design patterns. Excellent collaboration and communication skills are essential.

At the Video-AI team, we are dedicated to transforming cutting-edge machine learning into user-friendly products. We are investing in a robust tech stack that meets and surpasses industry standards through improved architecture, ensuring high performance, fidelity, and user-centric design.
The Machine Learning Engineering specialty delivers value to Canva's users by designing, building, and maintaining complex production systems to apply statistics and machine learning at scale. We're building a highly personalized Canva and developing user modeling that drives product features and marketing.
