Are you a highly skilled legal professional with a passion for public service?
We're seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to join our team and provide expert legal services across compliance, commercial transactions, and contract management.
This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the success of our local government organisation, working in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities: Legal Advice & Compliance: Provide clear, practical legal advice on compliance matters, ensuring Council staff are aware of their legal obligations and any associated risks.
Contract Management: Oversee the drafting, review, and amendment of contracts, and support contract negotiation and interpretation for Council's various business units.
Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with internal teams such as Procurement and Governance, as well as liaise with external stakeholders, including government bodies, suppliers, and the public.
Dispute Resolution: Advise on potential or existing disputes, providing risk assessments and recommending strategies to achieve timely and cost-effective resolutions.
Policy Review: Regularly review and update Council policies to ensure they align with legislative reforms and Council's strategic objectives.
Training & Education: Prepare and deliver legal training sessions for staff, providing practical guidance on legal matters relevant to their roles.
About You: Qualifications: Admitted as a lawyer in NSW, holding a current practising certificate or eligible to hold one.
Experience: At least two years of legal practice experience, ideally in a transactional, compliance, or contract management role.
Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues in plain English to non-legal professionals.
Attention to Detail: Demonstrated ability to "read between the lines" of legal documents and identify potential risks or issues.
Stakeholder Management: Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Problem Solving: Ability to navigate ambiguous situations and develop appropriate solutions that balance legal risk with Council's strategic priorities.
Autonomy & Initiative: Comfortable working independently, managing your own priorities, and taking the lead on legal matters as they arise.
Desirable Skills: Experience in local government, procurement, or public sector operations.
Knowledge of laws related to planning, environmental protection, intellectual property, privacy, and access to information.
A pragmatic, commercial mindset with a focus on achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
This is a unique opportunity to apply your legal expertise in a meaningful way, helping to shape the future of our community.
If you thrive in a fast-paced, multifaceted role and are ready to take on new challenges, we'd love to hear from you.
