Role Description/Criteria Responsibility for all students remains with the Class Teacher; therefore, a Learning Support Officer works under the direct supervision of the classroom Teacher and Leaders.
Professional expectations of a Learning Support Officer include but are not limited to the following:
Be an active member of the Learning Support Officer team Communicate effectively and display a high level of interpersonal skills to function as an effective team member; Share experience and learning strategies that support known disabilities and learning needs to provide relevant and positive learning opportunities for all students Demonstrate a sense of confidentiality, reliability, and sensitivity to students and their families; Contribute to the provision of a quality educational service by assisting and supporting teachers with the preparation and enhancement of learning materials and associated activities; Show respect, empathy, and acceptance for individual differences when dealing with students; Encourage students in ways that promote their positive self-concept and esteem; Provide opportunities for students to develop personal, social, and independent living skills; Use language, equipment, materials, and strategies suited to the students' needs; Help implement and collect evidence to support personalised learning plans (PLP) and for NCCD submission Assist with the modification of general activities to particular needs where necessary; Maintain anecdotal records on student achievement, regularly providing feedback to class teachers; Implement programs identified by specialists such as speech pathologists; Use knowledge of classroom strategies and programs (including classroom behaviour management strategies) for supporting students with special needs; Support the first aid and yard duty roster; Cover the school office when required, answering phones and simple tasks; Assist with small group activities as directed by the class teacher; Use computers/iPads with students when appropriate; Contribute to positive staff relations; Attend appropriate training throughout the school year e.g., first aid, occasional professional learning for staff Attend community events when possible e.g., sacramental celebrations, school picnics, twilight sports, school Christmas carols.
