We are now looking for an additional Laser Scientist to join our Engineering Services team in Adelaide, South Australia.

About the Role
Using leading edge technology to establish sovereign industry capability, as a Laser Scientist, you will support the delivery of innovative laser systems including laser weapons from concept development and laboratory experiments through to engineering design, build, and test.
In this key role as a Laser Scientist, you will be responsible for:
Advising on the optical design aspects of laser and optical subsystems including beam control and safety considerations.
Designing, building, and testing of laser and optical hardware and software systems.
Planning and technical leadership of projects as appropriate.
Providing input to larger projects as part of a team of subject matter experts.
Undertaking technical tasks relating to high energy laser development, test, and evaluation.
Engaging with relevant stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds.
Assisting to establish and mature laser lab operations.
Supporting system integration and field testing of high power laser systems.
To be successful for the role of Laser Scientist you will need:
Working knowledge of laser systems, optics, and basic properties of laser beams.
Extensive experience in setting up or constructing laser-oriented experiments or products.
Experience in modelling, experimentation, test and evaluation, and analysis.
Good working knowledge of laboratory test and measurement equipment.
Whilst not essential, experience in the following is desirable:
Fibre lasers (of any sort) - handling optical fibres including splicing, cleaving, and characterisation.
Optical engineering and optical design modelling.
Any theoretical modelling or simulation experience, particularly with propagation of light in atmosphere or thermal modelling due to absorption of optical radiation.
Laser optics at kW level, preferably including fibre lasers, beam quality management, and Opto / thermomechanical effects.
Characterization of narrow linewidth laser sources.
Data analysis and machine control in Matlab and/or Labview.
Professional standard optical design tools such as Zemax, and related 3D engineering or modelling packages.
Awareness of systems engineering practices.
Advanced laser technologies (active phase locking, spectrum broadening through modulation, auto-alignment technologies, length matching optical fibres, etc.).
Due to the nature of the role, applicants must be eligible for Australian Defence security clearance.
Current security clearance is preferred.
