Worawa Aboriginal College seeks an experienced academic professional to lead the Teaching and Learning team, starting Term 1, 2025.
Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is a boarding school for Aboriginal girls in their secondary years of schooling. An Aboriginal initiative, Worawa is an Independent school, owned and governed by Aboriginal people, and operates on a philosophy of 'Walking Together to Make a Difference'.
A full boarding school, Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. The diversity of Aboriginal Australia is reflected in the student population drawn from communities across the country.
The Worawa curriculum strongly emphasises foundation studies in literacy and numeracy while providing a breadth and depth of learning experiences across all key disciplines/learning areas. The Worawa Way pedagogy model is based on the Aboriginal values of Relationship, Responsibility, Respect and Rigour that inform all aspects of College operations. Along with the core academic program, emphasis is placed on nurturing and celebrating Aboriginal culture as a crucial aspect of student self-esteem and wellbeing.
The Role As the Head of Teaching and Learning, you will be responsible for leading and managing the academic team to ensure the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning outcomes. You will foster a holistic development environment for secondary school students, focusing on their overall growth and develop strategies to enhance student engagement and personalise learning experiences. Additionally, you will drive curriculum development and implementation while ensuring adherence to standards, oversee assessment practices and utilise data to inform teaching methods.
This role is a full time position and will have a teaching load of 0.5 FTE with the remaining 0.5 FTE dedicated to leadership responsibilities.
This position requires the incumbent to embrace the Worawa ethos of Aboriginal values, Aboriginal led decision making and the right to Aboriginal self-determination.
Selection Criteria Experience working with adolescents and a commitment to child safety.Registered Teacher in Victoria with a minimum Bachelor level qualification in Education/Teaching.Demonstrated experience in a senior leadership role in an education environment.Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and culturally safe practices.Knowledge of Victorian child safety standards, reporting, and duty of care requirements.Excellent teaching skills, patience, and ability to work with diverse student needs.Ability to lead and inspire staff, foster collaboration, and uphold school values.Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diversity of Aboriginal society and an ability to communicate sensitively with Indigenous Australians.Knowledge of government policy in relation to 'Closing the Gap' and Aboriginal-led initiatives aimed at improving Aboriginal education outcomes.Work collaboratively to achieve communication of an educational vision and passion for the development of an educational approach that meets the needs of all students.Proven ability to think and plan strategically, form and carry out action plans, and evaluate outcomes.Excellent organisational and planning skills with the ability to lead by example and delegate effectively.Continuing professional learning and capacity for reflection.Worawa Aboriginal College is an equal opportunity employer, has a commitment to child safety and has zero-tolerance for child abuse.
