Following the successful pilot program undertaken this year, the Department of Justice (DoJ) will soon host the second DoJ Graduate Legal Officer Program commencing in 2025. This program will facilitate on-the-job experience while Graduates undertake the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course (TLPC), a postgraduate professional legal training program whose graduates are eligible to apply for admission as legal practitioners. It is the only course of this type in Tasmania. As a graduate, you are also awarded a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the University of Tasmania.

Period of AppointmentFixed-term appointment from February to December 2025
Hours per fortnightPart-time hours structured around the Legal Practice Course until completion, with 73.5 hours per fortnight following completion of the course.
DutiesUndertake the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course.Assist experienced legal practitioners in relation to basic and routine matters.Undertake research, analyze information, make recommendations, and provide advice.Develop and maintain relevant documentation such as files, plans, reports, and correspondence.Liaise with stakeholders where required.Provide secretariat administrative and general support as required.Have graduated with a minimum of a three-year undergraduate or postgraduate legal degree in the last three years or have graduated by the end of January 2024 (qualifying degrees as rated by the Australian Qualifications Framework are at level 7 or above).The Head of State Service has determined that the person nominated for this vacancy is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion, or transfer.
