Laverton School is seeking an energetic and efficient Gardener-Handyperson to join their team.
As our Gardner - Handyperson, you will show initiative by using your skills to benefit the school in maintaining and presenting the school grounds and gardens in a clean tidy condition, providing students and staff with a safe external learning environment.
The successful applicant will ideally have a passion for the outdoors and enjoy working to provide a suitable growing environment for our students and staff. You will be required to maintain tools and equipment in a serviceable condition and perform minor repairs and maintenance as well as perform tasks and duties using safe work practices, with minimal disruption to students and staff. You will provide advice and support to the Manager Corporate Services on school grounds maintenance and maintain accurate gardening records.
We are seeking applicants with effective communication skills, who are friendly, helpful and caring; a punctual team player who enjoys gardening and taking pride in their work to keep our gardens looking great.
Laverton School is a Remote Teaching Service School and is located in the mining community of Laverton, km north east of Perth and km north east of Kalgoorlie. The present population of the town is approximately , of which a significant proportion of whom are transient - moving between Kalgoorlie, Mt Margaret, Leonora, Laverton and communities in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. Employment is mainly in mining, local business, government agencies and to a lesser degree in the pastoral industry. Laverton is on the edge of the Central Desert region and the beginning of the Great Central Road where the bitumen stops and the gravel starts; featuring hot summers, cool winters and a very low rainfall average of about mm per year.
Laverton School has approximately students with a large percentage of the population being of Aboriginal descent and significant number of students from Samoa and New Zealand. The school caters for K- and has developed a Senior Schooling Program that involves students undertaking studies using the School of Isolated and Distance Education facilities but also has a locally delivered health and fitness program. Cosmo Newberry and Mulga Queen Annexes have students on average but this can vary greatly throughout the year.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
TRAINING
Employees will be required to:
Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
The Department applies a ten () day breach period to this selection process.
