The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As the primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are:
Maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within itProtect the Antarctic environmentUnderstand the role of Antarctica in the global climate systemUndertake scientific work of practical, economic, and national significanceThe Job This position is part of a small team that conducts fisheries and ecosystem research at the AAD. Under the broad direction of the Section leader, the position will ensure that comprehensive operational and biological data can be collected from Australia's fisheries in the remote Southern Ocean and around Antarctica.
Key duties of the role include:
Maintain and improve existing fisheries data management systems in SQL Server and MS AccessDevelop new data collection and management systemsAssist in remote technical support for fisheries observers at seaSupport the logistics and operations of electronic data-collection equipment on Southern Ocean fishing vesselsConduct quality control and archiving of data acquired from the fisheries observer program and research voyages conducted by AAD.Flexible employment arrangements are available with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
