The Director, Event Management leads and manages the Event Management section within Elections Branch and is pivotal in setting the strategic direction and plans for the work area and contributing to agency wide strategic planning.
The role is responsible for undertaking work with a high level of complexity and/or sensitivity, utilising specialist, professional or technical knowledge and significant judgement to lead the development and delivery of large scale projects and strategies in relation to the external aspects of delivering an Electoral Event.
The key duties of the position include:
• Ensure the agency satisfies its legislative obligations under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Cth).
• Lead and manage a range of time sensitive, large scale projects to modernise and shape the delivery of an Electoral Event, while ensuring high quality project outcomes that are delivered on budget, using evidence based decision making that is robust under public scrutiny.
• Anticipate and establish priorities whilst identifying and managing risk in all areas of project decision making to provide required strategic and innovative project deliverables, ensuring future agency and stakeholder needs are addressed.
• Oversee the procurement and contract management of external services and activities to ensure that all deliverables are compliant with all legislation and policy, in line with contemporary practice, within contractual arrangements and in the best interest of the agency.
• Provide analysis on related aspects of the delivery of an Electoral Event and make significant contribution to the management, preparation and coordination of complex policy formulation, project management and the development of contemporary management strategies.
• Develop and manage key strategic internal and external relationships, this may include promoting, representing and negotiating on behalf of the AEC in various forums.
• Provide high quality and timely advice, guidance and reporting to Branch leadership and the Senior Executive cohort including, Executive Leadership Team and the Electoral Commissioner in relation to section/Branch functional responsibilities.
• Make and communicate decisions using professional judgement, factoring in risks and being sensitive to the context.
• Contribute to doctrine, election preparation and delivery activities in accordance with the election readiness framework, according to individual accountabilities and responsibilities.
• Perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as directed from time to time.
Additional responsibilities during an Electoral Event
• Manage staffing and additional resourcing requirements during the flex up phase of electoral event readiness, ensuring all additional resources are obtained within contractual arrangements and budget.
• The volume of requests for advice and matters, along with the urgency to resolve matters, will increase significantly prior to and during both electoral and referendum events. As a result, the occupant of this role may be required to manage a larger cohort of staff.
• Contribute to the provision of support by the Operations Branch by providing technical advice on projects within the role’s area of responsibility.

• AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
• Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
