The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) was set up to assist the development of Victoria's best athletes. It was established in 1990 by the State Government as a private trustee company, with its Board of Directors appointed by the Victorian Minister for Sport.The VIS is located at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The VIS headquarters completed a renovation in February 2023, providing a brand new workspace for athletes and staff. It is a non-residential institute, which utilises Melbourne's outstanding sporting facilities, to allow high performance athletes to live and train in Melbourne, the sporting capital of Australia.The VIS operates in partnership with National Sporting Organisations and State Sporting Associations to deliver high performance daily training environments (DTEs) for sports and athletes in support of the National High Performance Sport Strategy outcomes. The aim being to increase the data analytics and insights capability of the VIS by leading projects focused on improving organisational, program and athlete performance.The role will lead the VIS Data Intelligence team and liaise closely with the VIS IT team, to provide a data-informed competitive advantage by collecting, interpreting, and leveraging data to generate actionable insights that improve performance across all areas of the VIS.The role will work closely with counterparts in the National Institute Network (NIN) and broader national high-performance system to ensure the VIS is aligned and integrated with the system, able to leverage its capability and resources, and develop a sustainable operating model.Job responsibilities may include but not limited to:Frame business/organisational challenges into data problems, develop analytics-based solutions, lead the analysis and present actionable recommendations to key stakeholders.Provide expert and timely advice and reporting to the VIS Executive and Management teams, sporting programs, coaches, athletes and external stakeholder groups e.g. reports/ presentations/ dashboard creation to answer/ inform key questions.Develop and implement data capabilities by envisioning and executing strategies that align with the VIS overall strategic priorities and will influence decision making to enable the improvement of performance across the VIS.Data Governance – develop and maintain solutions to the ever increasing challenges presented by data governance legislation and frameworks to ensure compliance and 'best practice' in this area.Work collaboratively with the wider Australian High-Performance system (including State Institutes, AIS, International and Professional elite sport networks) to share and develop knowledge and leverage opportunities.Promoting data culture – Champion the strategic value of data informed solutions, driving the education and training of data analytics, promoting the data intelligence vision and implementing the adoption across the VIS.Maintain suitable infrastructure and mechanisms for quality data capture and accurate reporting against selected key business metrics.Foster and maintain an effective network of sport intelligence, technology, and innovation partners to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement, leading the organisation in the development of new insights, advanced modelling techniques, and data capabilities.Benchmark technology and innovation systems to ensure consistent improvement in the performance of the VIS through accessing world class technology and innovative practices.Desired Skills and ExperienceRequired qualifications/ experienceStrong analytical, strategic planning and organisational skills to effectively design and deliver a varied work program, manage resources and make ethically informed decisions to support the strategic goals of the business.Highly developed conceptual and problem-solving skills, including the demonstrated ability to quickly identify, analyse and research complex situations to devise appropriate strategies.Experience in developing, maintaining and deploying BI applications, analytical models and data pipelines.Experience leading a team of data professionals.Demonstrated experience in completing and managing multiple projects.Strong data storytelling and visualisation skills and the ability to communicate complex analytical and statistical concepts in an easy-to-understand fashion to non-technical stakeholders.Be hands-on and multi-task in the role; an ability to move effectively between strategic & operational levels.Experience working with cloud-based infrastructure (Azure, Google or AWS).Experience working with Database Management Systems.Knowledge of SQL and Python or R programming languages.Experience working with data visualisation / reporting tools such as Power BI & Tableau.Familiar with online code repository platforms such as GitHub or GitLab.Current Victorian Working with Children Check (must be in place before employment commences).Successful completion and currency of Level 1 & 2 Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) accreditation.Successful completion of SIA "Keep Sport Honest" Anti-match fixing education components.Experience working with Teamworks (previously known as SMARTABASE) athlete management system (AMS).Tertiary degree in data science, computer science, mathematics, economics, or a related field.Knowledge of international and national high-performance sport best practice (highly desirable).Diverse work experience nationally or internationally.How to Apply:To be considered for this opportunity, please submit your resume along with a cover letter that addresses the following:
