The RoleSpace Systems Branch is seeking Senior Communications Engineers.
The Branch acquires and sustains leading edge Satellite Communications (SATCOM) equipment in support of Australian Defence Force operations, both here and overseas.
The Satellite Communications Systems Program Office (SATCOMSPO) Communications Engineer will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a subject matter expert role.
They will have in-depth knowledge of the engineering function and are responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to their work within that function.
These roles require stakeholder (including industry) engagement and therefore will need to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
We are seeking candidates with a diverse range of experience and backgrounds in engineering, including people who have gained their experience outside of Defence and Government.
This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP).
This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability.

About our TeamThe Satellite Communications Systems Program Office within Space Systems Branch works in partnership with Industry to deliver satellite communication technology equipment and services to customers across Defence in sustainment and operational environments.
Space Systems Branch acquires and sustains SATCOM systems, and is a trusted advisor of SATCOM systems for the Australian Defence Organisation.
The team comprises professionals from various disciplines including project management, engineering, commercial, and logistics.
This multi-disciplinary team is composed of highly skilled and motivated Australian Public Service, Australian Defence Force and contracted personnel.
The team works from Brindabella Park offices in Canberra and maintains close collaboration with other parts of Defence and other Government Agencies.
As a Communications Engineer, you will be responsible to lead, plan, deliver critical very complex engineering activities, and provide advice in the field of communication engineering under broad direction.
Our Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have extensive experience and comprehensive knowledge of engineering management, preferably in large acquisition projects or sustainment and be able to demonstrate strong leadership capability.
Our ideal candidate will:
Demonstrate the ability to perform critical and complex system engineering activities;Have demonstrated experience or practical knowledge of satellite communications, including areas such as antenna systems, link budgets, amplifier and modem design;Have knowledge of network topologies, satellite access schemes and security issues related to satellite communications systems;Have strong business acumen and sound commercial judgement;Have demonstrated experience managing teams in a complex environment;Have excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with ability to negotiate and build relationships with stakeholders;Have high-level organisational skills, self-drive and initiative with the ability to influence others to achieve results.Security Clearance:Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at "Negative Vetting Level 2".
Mandatory Qualifications:This engineering position requires a Bachelor of Engineering from an Australian institution, or a qualification gained elsewhere, that satisfies the requirements of the Washington Accord for recognition as a Professional Engineer.
This engineering position may require the individual to be able to meet the requirements of Chartered Professional Engineer (Engineers Australia), Registered Professional Engineer (Professionals Australia) or Fellow/Member of Royal Institution of Naval Architects or demonstrated the ability to obtain such status within 12 months.
