You will work on the Nanoprobe beamline – a 100-meter-long hard X-ray microscope at the ANSTO Australian Synchrotron. The Nanoprobe beamline is currently being built and is due to come online in mid-2026. Once in operation, the Nanoprobe team will join three other teams in the Microscopy Beamline Group — Infrared Microspectroscopy (IRM), Terahertz - Far Infrared (THz), and X-ray Fluorescence Microscopy (XFM).
In this role you will work together with the beamline team and other teams across the synchrotron to deliver and then operate the Nanoprobe beamline. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists, researchers, and industry partners across a wide array of disciplines, providing them with unique opportunities to innovate using cutting-edge scientific technology.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Provide scientific and technical support, advice and training to national and international synchrotron beamline users. Develop expertise and knowledge to assist in the completion of the Nanoprobe beamline and development of plans and processes to move into user operations. Engage with colleagues and the Australian scientific community to develop a thriving synchrotron research community for the Nanoprobe beamline. Undertake research which increases own capacity for beamline usage and understanding, and improves scientific visibility of the profile and facilities of the Australian Synchrotron. Promote and develop outreach activities within the Beamline Group, and on behalf of the Australian Synchrotron and ANSTO, including participating in professional forums and other professional associations in line with your interests. Ensure appropriate policy, procedures, and guidelines are adhered to associated with the beamline and facility in particular in relation to WHS, radiation safety and equipment. Qualifications and experience (assessed at application stage) Applicants will be required to meet the qualifications and technical expertise requirements for their application to be considered further.
PhD in a relevant field of science (e.g. physics, materials science, Earth science, biology, chemistry, etc) (Essential). Post-doctoral or equivalent experience in a relevant area of research. (Desirable) Hands-on experience with, and a good understanding of, X-ray techniques, synchrotron methods, and/or analytical instrumentation, including the ability to acquire, process, analyse, and interpret data. (Essential) Experience in X-ray fluorescence and/or coherent diffraction methods including ptychography. (Desirable) Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively and willingly share knowledge and information with colleagues, users and other stakeholders. (Essential) Demonstrated ability to produce scientific or research outcomes. (Essential) Strong customer focus (Essential). Experience in a user-, teaching, or service-based environment supporting clients or students.
