The office of Senator Tammy Tyrrell is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Assistant Policy Adviser, based in the Senator's Electorate Office in Launceston, TAS.
The key objective of this role is to provide quality advice and support to the Senator relating to policy, public administration and political matters.
The role would suit an individual with a background in finance, economics and/or business and is familiar with the workings of Australia's parliamentary system.
The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to: Provide expert and timely advice on priority, complex and sensitive policy, public administration and political issues.
Offer written and verbal briefings to Senator Tyrrell and her staff on legislation before the Senate.
Assist in policy initiatives and research into the design and development of strategic policy responses.
Liaise with stakeholders as directed to identify key issues in relation to policy requirements.
Provide advice and support on policy issues in a wide variety of negotiations, meetings and consultations.
Assist in the preparation of speeches that are consistent with Senator Tyrrell's legislative position.
Proactively identify opportunities for strategic interventions in the ordinary business of the Senate to advance legislative priorities.
Liaise with stakeholders and staff to prepare supporting material in advance of Senate Estimates and committee inquiries.
Interstate travel may be required to attend Senate inquiry hearings and parliamentary sitting periods.
Other duties as directed.
The ideal applicant should possess the following skills and experience: Demonstrated experience in providing advice on a wide range of policy, public administration and political matters in a public, non-profit or private sector organisation.
A minimum of 12 months experience providing policy briefings in a professional capacity and a background in policy analysis.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience in the processes of planning, organising and implementing research.
Sound knowledge of the Australian parliamentary and political system and legislative frameworks.
Demonstrated capacity for applying analytical and problem-solving skills in developing solutions for complex issues.
Proven reliability in meeting deadlines and commitments, especially in high pressure situations.
Additionally, applicants with the following skills and experience would be highly desirable: A working knowledge of the practice and procedure of the Australian Senate.
Experience offering advice on legislation in a political office.
A history of proactively identifying opportunities for creative media interventions.
Employment Conditions: The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-2023 which include: The position is offered as an Assistant Adviser classification and a commencing salary between $84,789 and $101,701 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
An additional optional allowance may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.
Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.
An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.
The successful applicant will be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
