Position: Assistant Commissioner and ATO General Counsel, Office of General Counsel Key Duties: Lead the Office of General Counsel, providing expert legal services in areas such as administrative law, FOI, privacy, taxpayer confidentiality, monetary claims, employment law, commercial law, and corporate governance.
Manage general law risks and disputes, including non-tax claims and litigation against the ATO.
Ensure effective operation and continual improvement of in-house legal services.
Support diversity and inclusion, providing reasonable adjustments for candidates with disabilities and encouraging applications from Indigenous Australians and people with disabilities.
Develop a clear vision aligned with organizational goals, be accountable, innovative, collaborative, persuasive, self-aware, courageous, and passionate about building trust in the ATO.
Minimum Requirements: Legal qualifications (e.g., Bachelor of Laws), admission to practice law in Australia, and an unrestricted practicing certificate.
Extensive knowledge of legislative, regulatory, and compliance frameworks applicable to government agencies, including the Legal Services Directions 2017.
Experience providing solutions-focused advice on complex issues impacting agency operations.
Strong presentation skills for internal and external representation.
Ability to lead and develop a large in-house legal team.
