The work of the branch is varied, however general responsibilities at the APS 5-6 level in MID include:
- Work under limited guidance to produce various communication, media and ministerial products.
- Provide strategic guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively across the branch.
- Have accountability for tasks and decisions.
- Contribute to the setting of the direction of work priorities and practices, including monitoring work flow.
A merit pool will also be established to fill future positions.
**About our Team**
The Media and Information Disclosure Branch provides an excellent opportunity for staff to have strategic oversight of the work of the whole department. We routinely have opportunities to attend and contribute to Defence exercise, operations and events. In addition to learning and development opportunities.
There are opportunities in five teams:
Defence Media
The Defence Media team manages enquiries from the media about issues that affect all areas of Defence. We collaborate with experienced communication professionals and senior leaders from each service and group, to prepare media responses, media releases and other communication and media products. The team works directly with the Ministers' offices and their media advisors to ensure media activities are coordinated at a departmental and ministerial level. This includes major communication activities, ministerial announcements and events.
Freedom of Information - Operations
The team manages all FOI requests that come into the department and is instrumental in ensuring compliance with statutory obligations imposed by the FOI Act.
We work in a collaborative and supportive manner to provide specialist advice to action areas and decision makers, as well as FOI applicants about their rights and obligations under the FOI Act.
Freedom of Information - Review
The team manages all FOI internal reviews and external review cases following the original decision on a request for access to documents under the FOI Act.
We work collaboratively with review applicants, relevant business areas, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Accredited Decision Maker to manage and prepare timely, accurate review decisions and submissions and provide comprehensive advice on the cases.
Defence News Bureau
The Defence News Bureau delivers central social, digital and news media services for the Department. We engage with key stakeholders to create, publish and disseminate dynamic public affairs product that supports Defence's communication narrative. Our team consists of a multidisciplinary, integrated civilian and military workforce of journalists, photographers, media producers and social media specialists.
Strategic Issues Management
Strategic Issues Management is responsible for timely delivery of quality Question Time Briefs for Defence. We act as a conduit between the department and our Ministers, providing strategic advice and stakeholder engagement. In addition to this the team works on key projects and products for the branch and broader division.
- The ability to build positive, collaborative working relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Good judgement to manage competing priorities, maintain attention to detail and meet deadlines.
- The ability to anticipate and respond to diverse stakeholder needs and expectations, including Ministers and members of the Defence Senior Leadership Group, making logical connections of emerging issues across the enterprise.
- The ability to operate effectively as a team player.
- Initiative, flexibility and a demonstrated capacity to solve problems under pressure.
Experience in one of our deliverable areas is an advantage, but not essential. Most roles do not require after hours work, however those that do will be paid under overtime arrangements.
